Innovation INFINITE HORN LOADING Our Beryllium tweeter features an incredibly light and extremely rigid dome, that deliver a transparent and dynamic sound. Its main limitation comes from the compression of air in the cavity behind it. But the requirement for Sopra to be compact meant that as much of the cabinet as possible had to be used for the bass. We had to explore other options for loading the tweeter, which led us to come up with the IHL system. The "IHL" system enables to load the Beryllium tweeter respecting the compactness demand of the speaker. The rear wave of the tweeter is delicately and gradually absorbed to avoid any distortion. The treble definition is pushed to the maximum Stabilising the magnetic field NEUTRAL INDUCTANCE CIRCUIT Since the beginning, we have always had a great interest in the magnetic circuit, an essential aspect of a speaker drive unit. The precision and detail of audio reproduction depends on the stability of the magnetic field. NIC technology (Neutral Inductance Circuit) permits to control the magnetic field and finally enables to master it in order to limit distortion. It decreases the effects of distortion and give the sound a very high-definition and an unprecedented dynamic. The obsession with the midrange TUNED MASS DAMPER Our teams have revealed resonances which alter definition in the suspension which connects the cone to the basket. The solutions already known for increasing the damping properties of the suspension all result in an increase of the mass which consequently alters definition. The answer came from a technology used in earthquake-resistant skyscrapers and which is also used for the suspension on racing cars. "TMD" technology consists of optimising the suspension profile which controls the resonance in order to drastically reduce distortion and increase the definition of bass and midrange. DETAILS The main theme of Sopra is deliberately uncluttered, though it still offers connoisseurs the opportunity to enjoy all the small details. The grille with an incremental meshing motif protects the Beryllium tweeter and gives it a strong identity. This motif is repeated for sealing the curved back panel of the middle section. The terminal board, the thumb nuts and the adjustable spikes have all been specially designed for Sopra, as have the few visible screws, all of which were manufactured by watchmaking experts. MASTERING THE CABINET AND CHOICE OF MATERIALS Made in France Sopra’s cabinet was designed in our cabinet-making facility in Bourbon-Lancy (Burgundy, France) using the same manufacturing process as for Utopia The 69mm sandwich-machined front panel uses the same principle as ‘Gamma Structure’ to provide inertia and damping. Its density gives it the inertia necessary to provide a stable mechanical reference for optimal definition. The inside of the cabinet has no parallel side panels, and small Helmholtz resonators have been added to the lower section to prevent vertical standing waves. We chose glass as the material for the base of the loudspeaker to provide floor coupling, using spikes, which enabled the fastest propagation time possible, thus eliminating all halo effects in the bass. NO SACRIFICE OF PERFORMANCE TO AESTHETICS The design agency Pineau & Le Porcher designed Sopra with one rule: no sacrifice of performance to aesthetics. The Sopra line is destined for the most passionate sound enthusiasts. Its design favours performance, whilst exceptional materials associated with different lacquered finishes or wood finishes in oak (Light Oak and Black Oak) with High Gloss varnish for a radiant shine bringing even more elegance and warmth to your home décor. Substantial efforts were made to give the front a tidy appearance to iron out any aspects which could afflict the acoustics or the appearance. Sopra’s very structure is articulated around the intermediate section. This injected polyurethane component allows for the upper and lower cabinets to be inclined for the "Focus Time" (acoustic convergence of the channels). Handcrafted in Vienna, the City of Music, the Austrian Audio OC818 is a revolutionary multi-pattern dual-output large-diaphragm condenser microphone with optional wireless control. Onboard, the OC818 offers a choice of four selectable polar patterns, 10dB and 20dB pads, and three switchable highpass filters. But with Austrian Audio's open-source PolarDesigner plug-in (Mac and Windows), you can craft custom polar patterns for up to five different frequency bands. What's more, the PolarPilot mobile app (iOS, Android) gives you real-time wireless remote control over polar patterns, highpass filter, and pad settings via the optional OCR8 Bluetooth dongle. Note that the OC818 is always operating and mode switching purely in the analog domain; it's only the analog bias voltages that are being governed remotely. There is no digital signal in either the audio or bias paths. Giving you the best of both worlds, the Austrian Audio OC818 is a sophisticated tool that will help you make better-sounding recordings. Explore the sonic possibilities The OC818 offers four selectable onboard polar patterns: figure-8, supercardioid, cardioid, and omnidirectional, giving you immense flexibility when it comes to exploring the sonic possibilities offered by different recording techniques. The fifth setting is Preset mode, which works in tandem with the optional Bluetooth dongle that plugs into a port on the rear of the mic body and lets you program custom patterns. Austrian Audio microphones are rigorously tested on state-of-the-art measurement systems and precision matched to within a stringent 1dB tolerance — which means that with two of these excellent microphones, you can confidently implement stereo techniques such as Spaced Pair (A/B), X-Y (including Blumlein), ORTF array, Mid-Side (MS), and Spaced Omni (with or without a center mic). It's worth noting that a single OC818, with its two separate XLR outputs, is a stereo microphone in and of itself. But with two OC818s, your options expand exponentially. Dual mode and PolarDesigner The second output on the back of the OC818 delivers the signal from the rear capsule membrane, while the front membrane is output via the normal XLR plug. Simply plug in the OCC8 mini XLR cable supplied with your OC818 and set the polar pattern switch to the cardioid setting (the center position with the dual-cardioid icon). The OC818 will now work in Dual mode, with both capsule diaphragms being routed independently. In dual mode, you can record the two signals to separate tracks and use the PolarDesigner plug-in to subsequently modify the polar pattern in post production. PolarDesigner even lets you independently choose the polar pattern for up to five different frequency bands. Imagine how a pair of room mics with, for instance, a tight supercardioid pickup in the low frequencies, figure-8 for the mids, and omnidirectional for the highs would sound on a drum kit in a great-sounding room! Real-time remote control With Austrian Audio's OCR8 Bluetooth module (available separately) and the PolarPilot app for iOS and Android, you can remotely control your OC818 from your smartphone or tablet. Powered by the 48-volt phantom that powers the mic, the OCR8 is activated via the Preset mode switch setting (the "•" position all the way to the right). Once paired with your device, the PolarPilot app gives you full wireless control over the OC818's polar patterns, highpass filters, and pads. The app also features an overload monitor that displays a red bar if the signal is too loud. In that case, engage the 10dB pad to reduce bias voltage to the capsule and protect the mic’s internal circuitry from clipping. Outstanding results on any source The heart of any classic mic is a superior handmade capsule, and this wisdom is borne out in the Austrian Audio's proprietary CKR12 capsule. In keeping with its multi-pattern design specification, the OC818 uses the dual-diaphragm version of the CKR12 capsule, which, in concert with the microphone's custom electronic circuitry, delivers excellent results when used for vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, drum overheads, strings, brass, percussion, and room capture. What's more, the OC818's robust native 148dB maximum SPL capability — further increased by the inclusion of selectable 10dB and 20dB pads — also makes it ideal for louder sources such as tom toms and electric guitar cabinets. Mercury is the first Mastering DA converter in 120V rail technology. Mercury is a stereo digital to analog converter that fulfills the highest demands both technologically and tonally. A total of seven digital inputs, two AES/EBU, two SPDIF, two TOSLINK as well as USB can be connected to Mercury. AES input 2 also supports Dual-Wire (DW) mode. Each digital sources has its dedicated and illuminated switch for instant selection and fast comparison. DAC with DLP120 We looked at many converter designs and asked why innovations are almost exclusively on the digital side and very rarely on the analog side. Maybe it's because most of the developers have their background in digital technology and therefore develop analog technology more like a ‘cookbook’. We have 30 years of experience in analog technology and consider ‘cookbook’ designs rather boring, inefficient and in need of improvement. The output of the DAC-IC (AK4490) is an analog signal that must be filtered with a low-pass filter. This analog circuit is typically operated with the same voltage as the DAC-IC - for example 5V. Imagine that the first stage that finds the analog signal has a dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio limited by this voltage. What a bottleneck. The Mercury uses our 120V technology instead of the standard technology. And this twice in the newly developed DLP120 module. DLP stands for "Dual Low Pass". These are two separate analog filters in 120V technology. Depending on the type of digital signal, the analog signal passes through the PCM or DSD filter and can freely unfold into a huge dynamic range. This is audibly better. Velvet Sound® DA Converter The DA converter (DAC) in the Mercury is the AK4490-Velvet Sound® converter chip from AKM. It offers a bit depth of 32 bits and a maximum sampling rate of 768kHz for PCM digital signals and DSD4 or DSD256 for direct-stream digital signals. AES & DW AES (or more precisely AES3 or AES/EBU) is a standard for the exchange of digital audio signals between professional audio devices. AES3 was jointly developed by the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). An AES signal transports two encoded PCM audio channels at a maximum sampling rate of 192 kHz. The standard is defined under IEC 60958 Type I. A special feature is the Dual-Wire mode (DW), where two AES jacks are operated together to double the maximum sampling rate. The second AES input therefore has two XLR jacks. Dual-Wire allows Mercury to be connected to any digital AES/EBU source. Balanced, 3-core, 110 Ohm "twisted pair" cables with XLR plugs are used for connection. Coaxial The consumer version of AES is S/P-DIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface). It is the most common method for connecting digital audio devices worldwide. Typically, the digital output of a CD player is connected here. The jacks are labeled "Coaxial" and carry two encoded PCM audio channels with sampling rates up to 192kHz. This standard is defined under IEC 60958 Type II. Unbalanced, 2-wire 75-Ohm coaxial cables with RCA connectors are used for connection. Optical The two 'Type II Optical' connectors use optical fibre with an F05 connector better known by the Toshiba brand name TOSLINK. Just like the coaxial S/P-DIF inputs, these inputs support sampling rates up to 192kHz for encoded PCM audio. USB The USB port, for connecting a computer, converts PCM and DSD audio formats. Sample rates up to 768kHz are supported for PCM audio. For DSD audio up to DSD4 (quad-rate DSD or DSD256). No special driver is required for an Apple Mac, as Apple natively supports USB class 2 up to a sampling rate of 768kHz. To use Mercury to its full extent on a Windows PC, the SPL Mercury driver should be installed. With this driver, higher sampling rates than 44.1kHz and 48kHz can be output on a Windows PC. DSD via USB A playback of (unencrypted) DSD data from the computer can only be done via USB. Specific software players such as Audirvana Plus (Mac), Channel D Pure Music (Mac), J River Media Center (Mac/PC), Signalyst (PC), Foobar2000 (PC), JPlay (PC) support DSD playback. The USB Audio 2.0 specification defines different formats for handling PCM audio signals, but it does not define the handling of the DSD format. In 2012, representatives of many companies and institutions have developed a standard known as "DSD over PCM" or "DoP". This will represent and detect DSD audio in the PCM frames of the USB specification. SACD or BluRay players usually do not output the DSD stream for copy protection reasons. This means that such a player can only be connected to one analog input, e.g. on the SPL DMC Mastering Console. PCM & DSD Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) is a method of encoding sampled audio signals that is commonly used for uncompressed audio. It is the standard format for digital audio in computers, on compact discs, in digital telephony and other digital audio applications. Direct-Stream Digital (DSD) is a trademark of Sony and Philips. Both developed DSD for SACD (Super Audio CD), which was to become the designated successor to the CD (which was also developed by the two companies). Since PCM and DSD are digital formats, there are other ways of playback. The highest resolutions for music are now available from download portals such as HD Tracks, Qobuz, HIGHRESAUDIO, primephonic, HDMusicStore, Bleep, Cybele, Gimell, HD-Klassik, 7 Digital etc. DSD is fundamentally different from conventional PCM. While in a PCM stream the amplitude of an analog signal is sampled regularly at equal intervals and each sample thus obtained is quantized to the closest value within the digital stages, a DSD stream stores a sequence of 1-bit values before a "decimation" process converts the signal into a PCM signal. Volume Control On the analog side, Mercury offers a regular stereo output, which can be calibrated to all common reference levels, as well as another stereo output with continuously adjustable output level. Thus Mercury can also be used as a state-of-the-art monitor controller. The volume control for the variable output of the Mercury is completely analog. In most other designs the volume control is done digitally as part of the converter chip functionality. A disadvantage of digital volume control is that the original bit resolution is only available at 0dB (maximum value). As volume control we use the ALPS RK27 "Big Blue" potentiometer which provides a nice, sensitive feeling and excellent channel synchronisation. So not only the auditory, but also the haptic experience is on the highest level when adjusting the volume. 0dBfs Reference Level Holding the Sync button down for more than two seconds will cause Mercury to change from Sync to 0dBfs display. In this mode it is possible to define the analog level of a full scale digital signal (0dBfs = 0dB full scale). Mercury supports all currently used reference levels starting with 0dBfs = 14dBu. Followed by 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 22 and finally 24dBu.
