The Alexander Bb/High F Model 107X is based on the innovative design of the Model 301 triple horn which was introduced with great success in 2003. Model 107X is the result of a goal we defined: To construct a descant horn that provides articulation and tone similar to that of a F/Bb double horn. The elimination of the tuning bit in the mouthpiece re­ceiver and the launch of separate leadpipes and bell branches allows independent tuning of each side of the horn. The articulation and sound of the high F horn is also more homo­genous. The long leadpipe gives the Bb horn a fuller sound. The Model 107X also allows to add an F extension to the A valve in order to play the natural harmonics of the low F horn. With this instrument Gebr. Alexander gives horn players a new tool that makes the change from a full double horn to the descant horn a comfortable one.

There is also a definite correlation between mass and tonal projection. With full double horns the thumb valve serves to change to either the shorter Bb horn or the longer F horn. Many hornists have been searching for a full triple horn with the sound characteristics of the famous Alexander Model 103. This was achieved by a solution which is quite brilliant and complex. The placement of a valve where the leadpipe meets the bell branch allows the high F horn to be incorporated into the successful design of Model 103. In this solution the advantageous characteristics of the Model 103 are fully maintained. The original dimensions are kept and the F/Bb change valve remains at its common place. The high F horn is optimized by a separate bell branch. The use of different bores is consciously avoided in order to retain the evenness of sound and articulation. With Model 301 the musician receives a reliable triple horn with the option of shifting to the high F horn for especially difficult passages. The transition from double horn to triple horn is made an effortless one.

The triple horn covers not only the double horn (B / F) but also the high F horn within the same instrument. Compared to the low F horn, the high F horn is tuned up an octave due to the shorter tube length. This effects that the musician is optimal supported in very high passages and benefits from a more secure high position during concerts.

Most hornists recommend to start playing the horn on a single F instrument, as the F-Horn ist well known for the most authentic horn sound. This is quite useful for learning proper horn technique. Of course, it is also possible to achieve this effect by playing on the F side of a F/Bb double horn. However, there are two good reasons that a single F horn is preferable for a young beginner: it weighs much less than a double horn and the lighter weight eases articulation.

The single Bb horn offers the same advantage of lightness than the single F horn. Single Bb horns are highly appreciated by “high” hornists because they can make challenges in opera or concert that much easier. Typically, single Bb horns will be found in chamber music and solo situations. The sound of Bb horns is lean and supple. The notes in the low register below low Bb can be successfully played on Model 97 due to an extra fourth extension.

Every hornist who deals with Baroque music is confronted with challenges that cannot be ideally met with standard orchestral instruments, because the parts are written very high and the desired tone is not the mellow romantic sound, but bright and lustrous – emphasizing the relationship to the Baroque hunting horn. For such special challenges Gebr. Alexander developed the descant horns Model 99 in high Bb, Model 105 in high F and Model 105 in high G with F extension. These instruments can be assembled with either 3 or 4 valves. They are made exclusively with a narrow bore.
