The Paxman full double French Horn is a high end intermediate level instrument. Featuring a Geyer style wrap and high quality finish, this French Horn is the perfect instrument for the aspiring professional.

The Model 20 has been the mainstay of the Paxman range for many years. It is a completely original design that broke away from the three distinct layouts that have been used for much of the last century. Central to this design is the Merewether System, whereby the airflow travels in the same direction on both the F and Bb horns, minimising interruption from the turning rotor. The F and Bb sides of our full double horns are well-matched, and all models feature exclusive tuning slides for each side. Apart from the obvious benefits, the Bb tuning slide allows the player to add an extension with a manually operated A= valve. The mouthpipe main slide also helps to drain the instrument. The thumb valve is easily reversible to stand in either F or Bb. The model 20 is offered in any combination of three bores and three different alloys of brass.

The new triple horn design is Paxman’s response to separate requests from two of London’s top players. The requests were for a compensating double horn with a single storey change valve. While designing this, we realised that we could incorporate this feature successfully into a new and more compact triple horn. The single change valve has enabled us to design a very free-blowing horn with a very long leadpipe, and to include a stopping valve on the Bb horn as standard, whilst retaining our unique dual mouthpipe system. The instrument is very compact for a triple horn as well as being more aesthetically pleasing. It is designed to operate standing in Bb as this is the most efficient way of operating three thumb levers, although it can be made to play standing in F on request.

The compensating double system predates the first full double horn, and is an ideal instrument for those players who mainly use the Bb horn, but still like to have the F side. Paxman’s latest compensating double, the Model 33, was designed to meet the requirements of two of London’s top horn players, and has a single storey F/Bb change valve. The advantages of this are increased responsiveness and a freer blowing horn as a result of less disruption to the airflow on both sides of the instrument. A stopping valve is standard on this instrument.

Alexander tenor horns and baritones are characterized by their broadly proportioned but light construction. The body is bent in one piece and the entire series is manufactured with nickel silver appointments on the main bugel. The series is complemented by a 4 valve tenor horn (Model 146) which was the winner instrument of the German Musical Instrument Award 2013. The large bore of the instruments yields a full, characteristic sound in all registers. The baritone tuba (Spanish baritone) Model 151 was originally the preference of Spanish Banda musicians. Since then the baritone tuba has proven itself a worthwhile substitute for the euphonium. The bore of the tubing is taken from the baritone, but the expansion of bell branch and bell is much more pronounced. Upon special request the instrument can be manufactured with an auxiliary valve.

Due to the incomparable and typical Alexander-sound and a relatively low weight, Alexander Tubas offer a very comfortable handling. Even the Kaisertuba (Model 164) weights only 9.75 kg which ranges distinctly below the usual weight classes. The Bb tubas (Model 163 also available as C-instrument) are manufactured with four valves. Extra (auxiliary-) valves or individual pipe lengths for auxiliary valves are realizable on request.

Due to the special design of the horn, it is often supposed to have a high resistance which might be an advantage. The compensated double horn is also available with an additional stopping valve (Model 102ST). By using the K-model construction, both models develop an almost full horn-sound on the f-horn as well.

The musician can choose between half tone or stopping length by a removable extension slide.

As technical perfection has become more and more important, increasing numbers of hornists demand instruments that offer more security while still providing the ideal romantic sound. The challenge is to successfully combine the rich tone of the Bb horn with the increased security of the high F horn. Gebr. Alexander has worked on this problem for many years, and the latest result is the Bb/high F double descant horn Model 107. The Model 107 also allows to add an F extension to the A valve in order to play the natural harmonics of the low F horn.

Compared to the low F horn, the high F horn is tuned up an octave due to the shorter tube length. This effects that the musician is optimal supported in very high passages and benefits from a more secure high position during concerts.

The notes in the low register below low Bb can be successfully played with a fourth extension replacing the stopping extension, or better yet —as with Model 97—with a separate extra fourth extension. Model 90 can be ordered with an extra set of 3 valve slides and one main slide to convert the instrument into an F horn.
