The Model 20 has been the mainstay of the Paxman range for many years. It is a completely original design that broke away from the three distinct layouts that have been used for much of the last century. Central to this design is the Merewether System, whereby the airflow travels in the same direction on both the F and Bb horns, minimising interruption from the turning rotor. The F and Bb sides of our full double horns are well-matched, and all models feature exclusive tuning slides for each side. Apart from the obvious benefits, the Bb tuning slide allows the player to add an extension with a manually operated A= valve. The mouthpipe main slide also helps to drain the instrument. The thumb valve is easily reversible to stand in either F or Bb. The model 20 is offered in any combination of three bores and three different alloys of brass.

The new triple horn design is Paxman’s response to separate requests from two of London’s top players. The requests were for a compensating double horn with a single storey change valve. While designing this, we realised that we could incorporate this feature successfully into a new and more compact triple horn. The single change valve has enabled us to design a very free-blowing horn with a very long leadpipe, and to include a stopping valve on the Bb horn as standard, whilst retaining our unique dual mouthpipe system. The instrument is very compact for a triple horn as well as being more aesthetically pleasing. It is designed to operate standing in Bb as this is the most efficient way of operating three thumb levers, although it can be made to play standing in F on request.

The E-flat sopranino saxophone is regarded as a very delicate instrument with respect to both its playing approach as well as its fabrication. It is the highest voice in the saxophone family and is used more and more frequently in the contemporary repertoire. The “Super Action 80 Series II” Sopranino features good overall blowing and attractive timbre: despite its high pitch, it has a warm sound that is very close to the E-flat alto. It fully fits into the “Super Action 80 Series II” spirit, while asserting a real personality.

With the “Series III” tenor, the Selmer legend continues: incorporating numerous qualities from previous models, it asserts itself with a sound and dynamic range that make it the instrument of the greats. Acoustically, the “Series III” tenor is a particularly versatile instrument, allowing the musician to explore a multiplicity of sound colours according to concept and material. A real pleasure to play, with a generous lower register and easy subtones, its excellent response, striking pitch and balanced ergonomics will create a close relationship between musician and instrument, an essential condition for musical expressiveness.

The Series III baritone is the expression of a new acoustic and technical approach. Its warm voice and generous personality reveal themselves through several key improvements: With UNPARALLELED TUNING balance, its tone colour is remarkably EVEN, including in the extreme registers. The sound, rich in overtones and embracing a full range of tonalities, is accessible to all styles of music. The reduction in size of several soldered parts (ribs, bow guards…) and changes to the neck have been designed to optimize resonance: the instrument is immediately responsive to the musician’s slightest touch, without any loss of energy. It offers increased possibilities with great playing comfort. Thanks to the outstanding ergonomic design of the Series III, the volume of the baritone no longer seems imposing. The general DESIGN is particularly well balanced: pure refined lines, elegant mechanics and perfect keywork alignment. Compact keywork and a close grip enables enhanced dexterity and speed approaching that of the alto saxophone: playing through registers is made easy and further facilitated by natural handling. The key clearance is shortened for improved response and more accurate playing. Finally, a lighter overall weight and the peg system attached to the bell frees the musician from handling constraints. With the new Series III, the baritone finally comes into its own genuine identity. It opens the way to an original repertoire and soloist destiny, following in the path of the bass clarinet.
